Have you ever heard something come out of your own mouth that really surprised you? Have you ever used a word or a phrase, and then in shock or horror, you followed it up with, “THAT’S NOT ME. I don’t know where that came from!”

We might not like what comes out, but where it comes from is even worse news. It comes from IN us. Jesus put it this way:

“Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.” (Matthew 15:17-20 NIV)

This is the beauty and power of coming clean with God, and some other trusted friends, about what’s really going on in there. Then, and only then, we’ll discover a thing we like to call freedom!
