Building Up: What is God Saying? 

Read James 1:12-18. Now answer the following questions:

1- This promise of a “crown of life” shows up one more time in the Bible. Find and read Revelation 2:10. Now, how does James 1:12 and Revelation 2:10 help you take doing battle with temptation seriously?

2- What does James say about where temptation comes from? How have you seen this in your own life?

3- What are some of the reasons it’s always important to keep in mind that sin leads to death? How does being more aware of the consequences give us strength to make the right choice?

4- How does God’s generosity in giving us every good and perfect gift help us do battle with temptation? How does the gift of His “Word of truth” help you?

5- Look back over these verses. Which one do you need most today to help win over temptation?

 

Living Out: How do I obey?

1- Work together to create a Top Ten list of keys for doing battle with temptation.

2- Start talking about a service project for your group this summer. As soon as you nail it down and have a plan, GO FOR IT. We want to be LIVING OUT our faith all over this Valley of ours!

This past weekend at Community we started our series through the book of James, called BE BRAVE. At the end of the message I asked those who were in the midst of a storm, a personal trial, to stand so we could pray for them.

There were some BRAVE enough to stand. As they did, I asked people to gather around them from all sides to join hands or reach out and touch their shoulder. This is always a powerful moment for me when I see the Body of Christ gather around those who are hurting. It’s how it should be, not just for a short prayer, but throughout the storm.

I’ve heard story after story this week of how people have done exactly that. They’ve come alongside someone in need and truly been there for them.

Thanks Community for being, well, a COMMUNITY. You’ve got to be brave enough to ask for help, but you also have to know the people you’re asking are brave enough to stand with you in the storm.

Building Up: What is God Saying? 

Read James 1:1-11. Now answer the following questions:

1- What are some of the important keys to respond with JOY when life hits you between the eyes?

2- What are some of the promises in these verses that bring you hope in the midst of the pain?

3- Why does James warn us about being “double-minded”? How have you seen this create more problems for yourself or others?

4- What does the warnings to the “rich” have to do with us and our storms?

5- Share with the group a recent trial or storm you’ve been trying to make sense of.

 

Living Out: How do I obey?

1- What are some practical ways we can be helpful and encouraging to others as they go through a storm in their life? (Be specific)

2- Who do you know that might get some encouragement from this series? Invite them to Community for the weekend AND to your LifeGroup!

This weekend at Community we are starting our new study through the book of James. We’re calling the 12-week series: BE BRAVE!

The title makes sense when you start reading through this great little letter in our Bibles. James makes it clear that our relationship with God isn’t about what we say, it’s about how we live. And that, my friends, is going to take some courage!

The challenge of this book can be found in the first chapter:

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:21 NIV)

Bring everyone you know. This is going to be a very special summer series.

As most of you know already, we are huge supporters of My City Youth Center right here in our own Valley. They do so many great things for at-risk young people. One of those is their Teen Parents Program and Mommy Store.

Throughout the month of June, there will be a pack-n-go play pen in the lobby. You can do your part by buying a package (or ten) of diapers and bringing them with you on the weekend. Just put them in the play pen when you get to Community for a worship service.

Diapers

They can use all sizes of diapers, but need sizes 4 & 5 most often. We’re focusing on diapers this month, but if you want to pick up other baby products like baby wipes, bath products or toys, that’s ok too!
