Every year Michelle and I are privileged to spend time with some high-octane church leaders from around the country at a pastor/wives retreat. This year has again been fun, encouraging and challenging.

Each year there is a mixture of speakers, round-table discussions and free-time to catch up with friends. I really love being here. It stretches my thinking and show me that God is able to do way more than I typically think possible.

These are amazing people with a heart for their God and a passion for His Church. It’s just a few days…but it’s so worth the trip each and every time!

Stepping In: Getting things started!

1-For those of you who are married or dating, how did the homework go?

 

2-What stuck out to you in the weekend message? How did that challenge or encourage you?

 

3-How have you seen divorce affect your family or families you know?

 

Building Up: What is God Saying? 

Read Galatians 6:1-10, then answer the following questions:

 

Verse 1-What might be the steps we could take to help someone who is heading in the wrong direction? How do we avoid the feeling of superiority if it’s not a sin we struggle with?

 

Verse 2-How has someone else helped you carry your burdens?

 

Verses 3-6- These verses deal with our own pride and carrying our own load. How is that different from the encouragement to help carry someone else’s burdens? How can you see these verses apply specifically to marriage?

 

Verse 7-9-Read these verses again, then finish the following phrases:

 

*A man reaps what he sows definitely applies to marriage because…

 

*The harvest of working on a marriage over the years could look like…

 

 

Living Out: How do I obey?

1- Verse 10 talks about doing good to all. Make a Top Ten list of things you could specifically do that would positively affect your marriage, family, or close friendships.

 

2- We’ll all be serving around the Valley on April 26th with The Big Serve. Discuss another project your LifeGroup could do before we get to The Big Serve.

I told you in my last blog how much Michelle and I appreciate our LifeGroup. So that you know, what I said in that blog only scratches the surface of all that a LifeGroup does for us…and even more importantly, what it does for others.

We encourage all of our LifeGroups to serve outside of their own group at least once every 12 week session.

Here’s a great example of one of our LifeGroups that recently served beyond themselves…again!

Backpacks Ministry

Here’s a photo of our group doing backpacks last weekend. Four people didn’t get in the picture but everybody donated items to the project.

This was our sixth year. We’ve done over 500 backpacks, usually 50 at a time. Each is tagged for a boy or girl, 4-10yrs or 11-16yrs old, packed with a blanket, combs, brushes, toothbrush & paste, a notebook, journal or coloring book, pens, pencils, crayons, a small toy or a stuffed animal, a children’s book the young and a small bible for the teens.

They’re delivered to Riverside County DPSS and go out with the officers who take children into protective custody for what ever reason. Since kids barely have time to dress they usually leave home with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Given a back pack as soon as they’re taken from the house they have something to hold on to while they are being processed and when they arrive at a foster home they have something of their own in their hands. We’ve been told the blankets and stuffed animals seem to be the most treasured and that they often keep the backpacks for a long time.

I love hearing about how our church makes a difference in this Valley. A very real key to this impact happens all the time through our LifeGroups. Thanks to all who serve beyond our walls!!!

 

We love our LifeGroup. No doubt about it. We’ve also loved this marriage series discussion. We’ve laughed so hard and yet discovered some real and tangible keys to making our marriages even better.

I don’t actually know how people do life without a strong group of friends that do more than just discuss the weather or sports. We need people in our life we can be real with and people who can pick us up when we’ve blown it.

To all of you who are connected in a LifeGroup, congratulations. It won’t solve every problem or make like perfect…but it will give you a serious support system that you’ll need each and every day of your life.

We really are better together!

 

The last weekend for our series FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE is this coming weekend. I highly encourage you to GET HERE! This is going to be something we all need, whether married or not.

In the mean time. Keep doing your HOMEWORK:

  1. Pray every day with your spouse.
  2. Get your list of 3 ways you like to express love and 3 ways you like to receive love. Then, talk about it with your spouse.
  3. Discuss some healthy boundaries so that you don’t go close to temptation. Every couple needs to discuss this.
