Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:25-31 NIV)

From the first time I picked up John Ortberg’s book, “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat,” I looked at Peter through new lenses.

Yes, he took his eyes off Jesus and began to sink. But first…he got out of the boat and WALKED ON WATER! Crazy! Amazing!!

Taking that huge step of faith is one that always makes us hesitate. (The other disciples didn’t risk it…and they didn’t get to walk on the water.)

What’s your next BIG step of faith, of obedience? Does it have to do with one of the following commitments? If so, I say GO FOR IT! You’ll never regret getting out of the boat for these!

  1. Every Day With Jesus (Read your Bible & pray every day)
  2. Practical Love (Introduce someone to Jesus, invite them to church)
  3. Intentional Ministry (Serve on a ministry team, go on a mission trip)
  4. Comprehensive Investment (Tithe, give generously beyond that for the mission of Jesus)
