Prayer and Fasting
You can “fast” from more than just food. You could do without television, video games or social media. You could fast from any music besides worship music to intentionally fill your mind with the praises of God.
Bottom line, our fasting is to deny ourselves of something we want for something God wants in our lives. It’s giving up something good, so we can dive into something better.
As we start our 24 hour prayer experience this Friday night, I encourage you to figure out a way you could fast to better prepare your heart for our time of prayer.
One more thing. The Israelites were confronted by God about the bigger pictures our hearts should see as we fast and pray. Take a moment to read this from Isaiah 58 as you figure out what you’ll be fasting from.
“This is the kind of fast day I’m after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed, cancel debts. What I’m interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families.
Do this and the lights will turn on, and your lives will turn around at once. Your righteousness will pave your way. The God of glory will secure your passage. Then when you pray, God will answer. You’ll call out for help and I’ll say, ‘Here I am.’”(Isaiah 58:6-9 MSG)
