Why We Need Others

Why we need others

Riding in Simpson Park is easy to navigate. Because of the lack of trees, you can always see where you need to go, even if you’re not on the trail you wanted to be on.

Idyllwild is a different story. In the last year, I started riding more with Josh. He lives up there, knows the trails, and is patient with my older, slower pedaling.

His grandparents, Donovan and Joanna White, have been a part of Community for years now, and getting to know their grandson has been a real pleasure. (Yes, grandma, he does wear a helmet. He just took it off right before the picture.)

All of this led me to thinking about how much we need other people in our lives…older and younger. We need other people to…

  • Lead us into new adventures, warning of trouble ahead and letting us know when we can let it GO!
  • Be patient and reassuring when we can’t keep up.
  • Encourage us by pointing out our gains and yes, lovingly point out where we’re going wrong.
  • When we’re close enough, their example is powerful enough to show us even better skills needed to navigate the challenges of life.

Josh is also a strong Christian, so these lessons translate way beyond mountain biking.

Who’s on your team? Who’s in your corner? You get the idea. So, who is it? Who are you learning from AND who are you helping by being a strong example?

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12 NIV)
