If you happen to follow me on Instagram, then you already know I got out on the waves with a big board. Sam and I tried paddle boarding in the ocean, then I took a few runs at surfing.

I love the beach and for years have watched people do both. They make it look so easy. I finally was able to stand up and paddle for a while, but it’s much harder than it looks. (This wasn’t the calm harbor.) Then, the surfing. The first time I got up it was only for a few seconds, and then I fell into the water that was about a foot deep. No joke, that’s how close I was to the shore. HA.

I was determined, so I went back and and caught a wave I was able to ride for a while. Here’s the proof.

It actually happens in a variety of disciplines. Some people, who have put in the work, make something look easy, when in fact, IT IS NOT.

This all got me thinking about Community. (Yes, even while I’m away, I miss you all very much and think about you every day.) So here’s what I’m thinking. Community makes some things look easy…that really aren’t…but because of the dedication of the people, it seems to happen naturally. Here’s two examples:

Making people feel at home. When guests arrive for the first time, sure there are greeters, but it’s the total church family that makes people feel like they’ve found a home. From the parking lot, to the cafe, the children’s check-in areas to the worship center. Each of these points of contact make a deep impression on people before the worship experience ever gets started.

Serving the Valley. From The Big Serve to a bunch of little serves throughout the year, Community makes a difference in our community. It’s much easier to stay focused on ourselves. To be “known” in our valley as a church that cares and serves requires a whole lot of people keeping this on the front burner. This isn’t easy, but you all make it look that way!

Both of these things require constant, faithful attention. It only seems natural, a part of our DNA, when we work on them, talk about them, pray for them, and intentionally love others every step of the way.

Keep it up!
