Stepping In: Getting things started!

1- What are some helpful or not-so-helpful ways your parents tried to teach you to be responsible?

2- Of the last five things kids need we looked at this past weekend, which one resonated with you the most…and why. (Initiated responsibility, positive memories, consistent presence, role models, peaceful home)

Building Up: What is God Saying?

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-2. God gave more than just the “10 commandments”. Why is the “fear of the Lord”  the key to a blessed and effective life?

Read Deuteronomy 6:3. There are some promises here for obeying God’s Word. What other promises does God give throughout His Word that are connected to our obedience? (Read Deut. 5:32-33 for more on this connection between obedience and promise.)

Read Deuteronomy 6:4. Another way to understand “The Lord is one,” is to think of it like this: “The Lord is the One and Only.” There is no other God! What are the other gods in our lives that are constantly trying to get our attention, devotion and worship?

Read Deuteronomy 6:5. We know Jesus repeats this same command when He is summing up the Bible. Why is “loving” God the absolute key to full devotion and obedience?

Read Deuteronomy 6:6. Why does God so often connect His commandments to our hearts? What happens if we only know God’s commands in our minds, but aren’t engaged with them in our hearts?

Read Deuteronomy 6:7. What are the practical, daily ways we can help our children understand God’s commands and promises, as well as His love and grace?

Why is passing on God’s love and His Word to our children the most important thing we can do for them?

If you’re a parent with children in the home now, what is most frustrating for you as you try to do this?

Read Deuteronomy 6:8-9. Here are some physical ways they were to keep God’s Word visibly in front of them. What are some ways we can do this in our lives?

Living Out: How do I obey?

1 – Who in your life, besides your parents, has helped mold you and help you in your faith journey?

2 – Who can you help, who may not be getting the best help from their parents?
