When we talk about “Intentional Ministry” and we commit to serve in an area where Community is making a difference, you need to start with your heart…not your skill set.

Of course, God has wired you in a specific way that is unique to you. You were made on purpose for a purpose. You can do things that only you can do!

However, we have to start with the heart. And more importantly, where your heart is connected.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

I don’t care how skilled you are, apart from Jesus you won’t be doing ANYTHING that really matters.

Heart check time:

Do I feel I need to be asked to join a certain ministry team?

Do I ever feel like if I quit helping/serving, God Himself would have to call it quits?

Do I sometimes secretly wish I had someone else’s skill set? Anyone else’s skill set?

Am I willing to do whatever God leads me to do, even if it doesn’t match up with my specific gifts?

Read that last one again. Sometimes our security is in our ability and our heart is far from simply being willing to serve. If there’s a need, and God points it out to me, am I willing to roll up my sleeves and jump in? Even if I don’t get any credit? Even if no one is watching? Even if I’m not the best one at it?

Throughout your day, listen to God’s voice. When He says serve…get to it!

Prayer thought:

Lord, continue to intensely reveal the area you want me to step in and serve in sacrificially. And as I serve, help me to never take for granted what you are doing through me and those beside me. Keep my heart aligned with yours; help me not to become complacent or bitter, but to have a renewed spirit in you. I am willing to do whatever you are leading me to do. Thank you for being a personal God and for leading me in a relationship with you, amen.
