Our mouth reflects what’s going on in our heart, at least that’s what Jesus said…so I’m going with it. Are you known as a person who encourages and builds up others, or are you the sort that is typically critical, negative, whinny and disgruntled?
Before you say, “That’s just how I am. I call ‘em as I see ‘em,” you should read these words from the Apostle Paul:
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29 NIV)
What if the ONLY thing we said to ANYONE else was something that would “build them up” and “benefit” them?
We know it’s how we’re supposed to be and how we’re supposed to talk, but what does it matter? It matters a great deal.
Back to our journey of building credibility…how far do you think sincere encouragement will take you? If you’re unsure, it’s going to take you pretty far!
Today your assignment is simple: Look for ways to encourage the people God places in your path.
Maybe the teacher or boss that’s in a bad mood needs something to change the direction of their day.
Maybe your friend who’s usually fairly positive just received some tough news.
Maybe your family member needs more from you today than, “You know what you SHOULD be doing…” Maybe they need a hug and reassurance that you love them unconditionally.
Keep listening to Jesus and He will point out the people who need encouragement the most throughout your day.
Prayer thought:
Lord, let me be your vessel. Allow me to speak YOUR words and YOUR truth. Empty me and fill me with you. Let your purpose be my guide and your people be my passion.
“He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:30 NIV)
