Though we’ll be settling in and chewing on just one verse today, the verses around it are important and valuable. If you want, you may start with verse one. However, I want to jump right to verse 10.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)

Here are the four words we’re going to focus on for a minute:

WE–Paul is writing to a church, not an individual. “We” are God’s handiwork. Together we make up this Body of Christ. Each one of us is needed. Each one has a role to play, but together we get it done. We are, as Rick Warren said, “better together.”

HANDIWORK–The original word here could be translated “masterpiece”. Its root is the same word where we get the word “poem” from. In other words, God has made “WE” something special. Really special!

WORKS–He calls them “good works,” but don’t think for a moment that we are earning our salvation. (You can read verses 8-9 for clarification on that.) However, these works are what we were created for. We are difference makers by design. His design.

DO–If we’re a masterpiece of God’s creation to do the kinds of things that will change this world for the better…we better get going.

The last line in verse 10 from The Message translation says, “…work we had better be doing.” I like that!

The power of WE actually gets going when WE get going!

Prayer thought:

We have been spending each day focusing our prayer time on our personal revelations and growth as we strive to spend every day walking with Jesus. Today, let’s pray for the “WE”. Spend some time praying for your brothers and sisters that fill the church building each week. Pray for unity, for servants’ hearts, for gifts to be unleashed and used in a new and fresh way. Pray that simply attending would no longer be what is comfortable, and that a restlessness of spirit would cause all of us to take that next step. Pray that we can fulfill what is written in these verses in Ephesians.
