We moved to Des Moines, Iowa, as I was entering high school. I wasn’t thrilled about it since we were moving from San Juan Capistrano. From surfing to corn! However, one thing from that move marked me for life.
Our house in Des Moines wasn’t ready to move in, so we rented an apartment for a month or so. What marked me was this: We didn’t even unpack most of our stuff. Hey, we knew we wouldn’t be there long. It wasn’t our home!
Are you ahead of me yet?
Randy Alcorn’s next principle is simple and yet earth shattering:
Heaven, not earth, is my home.
Take a moment and slowly read Jesus’ story in Luke 12:13-21.
Here’s verse 15 one more time out of The Message:
“Speaking to the people, he went on, ‘Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot.’”
The fool thinks this world is his/her home. The truth for all followers of Jesus is this:
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” (Philippians 3:20-21 NIV)
With Heaven in mind, have you figured out your special offering for this coming weekend? Remember, our goal is $200,000. Let’s ALL bring something that honors God and says we understand HEAVEN IS OUR HOME!
Prayer thought:
Jesus LOVES you! It is important for us to keep that in mind when reading his commands and warnings about holding on to our money. He is warning us for our own good, like a parent yelling at a child running into the street, He says;
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed…” (Luke 12:15 NIV)
If we think He is asking too much of us, let’s mediate on this next verse and let it prompt our prayer time today.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)
